Endurance and Enjoyment

Each year I ask the Lord to direct me to a word or words or phrase to help me in my walk with Him.  As is His perfect character, He never fails to give me just what I need!

My words for 2011 are ENDURE and ENJOY.  While it is probably pretty corny to most (my hubby laughs every year when I share my words), I hold tight to my words knowing they are His words to me.

And because I believe in the total inerrancy of Scripture, 2 Timothy 3:16-17 is something I cling to in my (many!) times of need.  It states the following:

"All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work."

So, today, I am running to the book of James that gives weight to my words for 2011.  As I've been (slowly) working on memorizing the book of James, I am getting fresh faith to "count it ALL joy" and to "remain steadfast when under trial" and "to bridle my tongue" as I deal with the lot for today.

Today I have already had dirty diapers to change, mouths to feed, dishes stacking, children to correct and train, Scripture to review, laundry to continue, a baby to nurse, and then... the HEAT which has me seeing how much I need my God and how thankful that He is near to me.

My heat?  Vomit.  Yes, and I LOATHE vomit.  The smell is horrible but cleaning it up has got to be the most undesirable chore to me.  But, I will endure and... dare I say, enjoy it.  All because He told me to count it as joy for He will use it for my good.

What are you joyfully enduring today?

Looking Back on my 6th Pregnancy

I'm thirty-six years old and pregnant for the 6th time.  My body has greatly changed since I was expecting my first at 30 years old.  But, I think my perspective has changed the most.

Now, let me first say I understand that MANY women dread pregnancy and actually have very unpleasant experiences.  Through God's kindness, I am NOT one of those ladies.  That said, I do believe pregnancy can easily turn from being a blessing to a burden for lots of ladies, simply because we believe lies from the world.  And I've been quite guilty of believing and even encouraging those lies.

Some of the lies that greatly affected my past pregnancies mainly revolved around what our trustworthy medical field would purport about it.  But others were already in my mind, like I was supposed to have weird cravings and had to be extra careful about any kind of physical activity, regardless of stage in pregnacy and previous level of physical activity.  What I believe the actual truth to be is God has made SOME women to have pregnancies that DO require extra levels of precaution and rest and medical intervention BUT the vast majority of pregnancies don't need anywhere near the amount of medical intervention.

My first pregnancy was exciting.  My first ultrasound showed something that the doctor thought was twins.  It turned out to be fibroids.  The result, I had multiple ultrasounds, I found myself wanting as many as they would allow, and I battled fear of having those pesky things get in the way of me having a vaginal birth.  I was told that I would want them removed post-delivery.

Well, I've had those common fibroids with each pregnancy and each time they have not interfered with any delivery, praise God.  And, though the only option from the medical field's perspective was eventually have them removed as they are common and most women will have them at some point, with this sixth pregnancy I've learned that a good midwife can simply feel them, that there is no need to have ultrasounds to see them as they move and change, and they can, in fact, shrink (or at least have their growth stunted)!

The Lord spoke of women having babies way back in the 3rd chapter of the first book of the Bible.  Pregnancy, labor, and birth are NOT new or surprising or things to dread.  But we can act like they are, can't we?  These are lies that need to be fought.  God has a purpose even in a woman being pregnant, laboring, and giving birth.  And He has spoken quite clearly that women will bear children in PAIN.  Yet, in reading Hebrews 12 this morning, I was reminded that even the pain of childbirth is good as it will yield fruit which He has created.

In my mind, one of the best fruits of being pregnant, laboring, and then giving birth is discipline.  "It is for discipline that you have to endure."  And let's be real, "For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it."  But we all need to be trained by it.  And

So, why am I writing all this?  I am not hoping to offend.  I am hoping to encourage other pregnant women out there to not just accept what might have been fed to you from the world about this good gift from God.  I love how my hubby puts it - constantly audit your life - and consider the blessings that come from the "difficulties" of pregnancy.

In the meantime, if you find yourself struggling with the perceived burden of pregnancy, please consider joining me in joyfully enduring this most precious, unique season.  God is sovereign and He is good.  And He is working out His will, in and through us, with these light, momentary afflictions.  Consider Him who endured from sinners such hostility against Himself so that you do not grow weary or fainthearted - by looking to the cross where Jesus made a way for us to be redeemed, once and for all!

A Post for the Mothers Out There

I read this post earlier and found myself crying at the end.  So kind of God to use other believers to enourage us in our roles...

... for He cares about our little ones, eh?

Yes, He cares about their souls... and our souls... and we should too!

Chow.  Off to focus on some souls!

Coveting... and Laundry

Back at our old church in MD I remember hearing at message by one of our pastors where he shared a helpful parenting strategy when at the mall with his kids.  He would prepare his kids for the many unhelpful things they would see by telling them to turn off their "I wanters."  Love, love that!  And I've used it since then... mostly for myself!

We recently had some work done on our basement and the whole process has reminded me of how prone my heart is to wander as I battle with discontentment.  I find my "I wanter" is often ON even when I am surrounded by abundant blessings.

Can you relate?

This was our basement laundry area BEFORE anything was done:

Yep.  And that is where I went to do my laundry for 3 years.  (Do notice the new washer, though, my Pops got me around Christmas!)  But, truly, at least I HAD a place to do laundry in my own home that I had at my disposal ANYTIME I needed it.  While I didn't like that the walls were covered in mold, the concrete floor was often damp and the kids couldn't come down making me make multiple trips to deal with what happens when Mommy was not upstairs, it was still a functional laundry room.  More than I deserved.

Enter my man - again!  Yep.  He made up his mind to get some work done in our basement to make it a bit easier for me.  His grand plan: add a full bathroom and make a real laundry room with walls and hook up our 2nd washer (the old one the new washer replaced) so I could do more in less time.  Well, if you're anything like me, you couldn't see any of THAT happening in THAT space.

Well, though we went over our anticipated budget, this is what happened.  We had our laundry area moved to the space you come to just as you enter the basement.  Lots of plumbing work.  Lots of de-molding work.  Lots of waterproofing work.

After that, Pops called in some other guys to turn it into "a room."

Did you see the light from the new windows?!?!  What a difference!  And we decided to go with walls that don't go all the way up so as to make it still very "open" and not cut off all the light to the rest of the basement.  Plus, once the play/lounge area is created I can still keep an eye on things while doing laundry!

Next came the floor and ceiling!!!!

And some paint...

And to finish it off...

Oh- and so what that our 2nd washer decided to "die" upon completion of this project!  I suppose we'll find another $50 one from Craigslist one of these days!  Hey, it lasted us 3 years!  Not bad for $50!

Thank You, Lord, for helping me see that I often sin in discontentment and allow the desires of this world overpower what You are calling me to and what You have graciously given me.  I trust Your grace will help me fight this area of sin and truly be joyful as I recall Your kindness to me.  May I not shake my fist at You when I have laundry to do... especially when I do it in such luxury!

Coveting... and Cloth Diapers

I had a MAJOR breakdown last night. You know the kind, right? When you cry so much your throat hurts. And your eyes feel like they are on fire and you can barely keep them open. Much of the breakdown had to do with coveting. Yep. SIN. Oh, friends, sometimes the adventure is just too much, eh?

Can you relate?

I was engaging in the dangerous activity of sinful comparison. I envied how clean this person's house was, how perfectly they decorated everything, how delicious the meal they prepared was, how easy life looked for them. I was seeing how great my failures were as I couldn't measure up in the least.

While the sin at war within my heart would love for you to say, "Aw. Poor, poor Kia!" what you need to say is, "Get a grip, lady! You are too self-focused!" Yes, I needed to get my eyes off of me and on HIM!

My breakdown was really about me not getting what I want. It was about me believing the crazy lie that I actually deserve anything but the wrath of God. I was communicating to God that He wasn't enough.

But, truly HE is more than ENOUGH. He's all that I need.

So, I am (again) fighting the coveting trap which seems to stem from a heart of not truly being thankful to God for taking care of my greatest need through the gift of salvation.

But the struggle does continue. Yes, war is on... still.

Wanna know what I want right now? You're not gonna believe this.

But I want some of these:

Is that not the cutest diaper? And ten times better than them looking good is they are supposed to be ONE SIZE fits all. Oh- diapers to put on both Sweet P and Baby A and not confuse anyone else changing my kiddos diapers?

Guess what? Lindsay over at Passionate Homemaking did a review of these diapers and is now sponsoring a giveaway for these adorable, ALL COTTON (which is important to me), one-size diapers from a company that has a mission I'd like to support.

So, while I am saying NO to coveting, I sure am heading over to Passionate Homemaking and trying to get myself a cool, free Envibum diaper! Wanna join me? Oh- and I'll do my best, with th help of the Holy Spirit, of course, to not covet if you win and not me!
